Let's be old together.

Two 70-year-olds Walked into a Blog

A funny thing happened on the way to launching this blog. The name I chose, How to Be Old, perfectly captured the attitude I planned to share. It seemed such a unique take. Not so much. That same week, Lyn Slater launched a book by the same name: How to Be Old. Lyn is a writer, model, and retired professor and has been a social media presence for more than a decade. She writes as the Accidental Icon, embracing her age, showing that style can shine through wrinkles. According to her publisher, Penguin Random House, the memoir tells the ten-year story of Lyn’s sixties, the sometimes-glamorous, sometimes-turbulent decade of Accidental Icon.”

I’ve ordered the book and will review it soon. From reading her blog, now titled How to Be Old, I see she has a similar sense of herself—one defined by character traits rather than demographics. Still, you would never confuse us. She’s a fashion influencer. I am all about elastic waists and fleece sweatshirts.

I could keep the name How To Be Old, but it hardly sounds original now, and that defeats a bit of my purpose. So we’re changing the name of this blog to what it actually should have been from the beginning: I Used To Be Young, with the tagline, but I got over it.

If somebody else is out there writing a book with that title, I wish them well, but they will have to compete with me, because I am sticking with this name. I like it a lot and wonder why I didn’t use it from the start. So, for all of you who used to be young, sign up and ride along. Repeat after me: I Used to Be Young, But I Got Over It.
